Dangerous Lives of Street Ladies helsea is a distrcit in New York City's Manhattan section. It covers roughly the area of 14th Street to 30th Street on the West side. Its a great place for tourists and fast foods during normal hours. Normal being anytime between 8:00am to 11:00pm most days.
The seedy side is the wee hours where many 'working gurls' would congregate and display their wares for those interested in such encounters. It was a very heady time - Donna Summer, the BeeGees and the Eagles dominated the airways, cell phones were unheard of and every street girl wanted to be the persona of Beverly Johnson with the oral skills of Linda Lovelace.
The girls worked hard at their trade, but it was chancey! On a good night, a girl could make anywhere from 400.00 to a couple thousand, depending on how you worked.
A bad day would be when you got arrested for any of the various charges associated with being out there and spent the night in jail - an adventure in itself!
Getting arrested several times would get you a nice 30 day stretch in Riker's Island, a place you really don't want to visit!
Of course the very worst would be if you never came back from a car ride with a client! Many girls were found murdered, mutilated and floating in the East River.
I guess you had to be street-smart, astute, fit, ready to fight and ready to run when the time warranted. It was hilarious to see girls sprinting, running away from the police at top speed in 6 and 7 inch heels!
How things have changed since then! Many girls who are internet savy can make the same money and never leave the comfort of their homes. No physical sex, no chance of STDs, no danger of meeting a slasher or other nut. When the bills are due and its February when the temp is sub-zero, this means quite a bit!
